Different Languages
One misconception about Iranians is that they speak Arabic, just like their neighboring countries in the Middle East. However, this is not the case – Iran’s national language is actually Persian, referred to by the locals as Farsi. It is a language that is commonly spoken in Afghanistan and Tajikistan as well.
Iran, being a multicultural nation with various ethnic groups, also has a number of other languages spoken throughout the country. For example, Gilaki and Mazandarani are commonly spoken in the north, while Kurdish is spoken in Kurdistan province. Azerbaijani Turkish, spoken in various parts of the country, is the second most common language. Lurish and Lari, meanwhile, are commonly spoken in the south.
