UNESCO World Heritage Sites
If you are looking to visit Iran someday, you’ll probably never run out of places to visit. Iran is home to 23 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, largely due to an ancient civilization – one of the world’s oldest – which once thrived there. Aside from these 23 sites, there are 55 more that are also included on UNESCO’s Tentative List.
One of the most notable sites is Persepolis, the capital of the Achaemenid Empire which lasted from 550-330 BCE. The Shushtar Historical Hydraulic System, meanwhile, is a complex irrigation system that includes water mills, tunnels, canals, and dams, carefully constructed to ensure the people living there have a steady supply of fresh water.
