As previously mentioned, Instagram is blocked in Iran. Indeed, pretty much all social media channels are blocked in the conservative country. Those who want to access Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Instagram, and many other similar sites and applications have to use a VPN.
In 2012, Iran began using a state-controlled national internet, which resulted in numerous websites being blocked. The Iranian government defended this state-controlled network, saying that it was their way of providing fast and reliable internet to the people at a much lower cost. Critics, however, framed it as a form of oppression since it restricts the information that can be accessed online.
