The Record-Breaking Carpet
The main prayer room of the Sheikh Zayed mosque in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates, is currently home to the world’s largest carpet, produced by the Iran Carpet Company (ICC). Measuring an incredible 60,600.81 square feet (or 5,630 square meters), this carpet is about the same size as a football field.
It took around 38 tons of cotton and wool, 1,200 weavers from Iran’s Khorasan Province, and over 18 months of painstaking work to complete the carpet. Woven in nine different parts due to its massive size, the carpet was officially unveiled in 2007, just in time for the mosque’s opening.
