The Granite State, Part 2
Even though New Hampshire has a relatively small population, it has always played a major role in the presidential race. Why, you ask? Because it is legal in New Hampshire for independents or undeclared voters to vote in the Republican or Democratic primary elections. They may register on site to vote and may regain their undeclared status after. In February 2016, over 40 percent of the electorate was undeclared.

In the 2016 Presidential election, Hilary Clinton won New Hampshire. Historically, New Hampshire has cast votes for the winning candidate the majority of the time. From 1900 to 2000, the state has supported more Republican than Democratic candidates. From 2000 onwards, however, the state has favored Democratic presidential candidates, except in 2000, when 48 percent of the voters elected George W. Bush.
