Land of 10,000 Lakes, Part 2
One of Minnesota’s greatest points of pride is legendary musician, Prince. The brilliant singer, songwriter, and producer was the first to introduce the Minneapolis sound, a genre under funk rock that contains synth-pop and new-wave elements. He was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota and wrote his first song there at the age of seven. A decade later, he released his debut album entitled For You. Throughout his career, Prince sold more than 100 million records and received seven Grammys, seven Brit Awards, six American Music Awards, four MTV Music Awards, one Academy Award, and one Golden Globe Award. No wonder Minnesota is so proud of this guy.

In early 2016, Prince started to feel ill. He performed one final show on April 14, despite feeling unwell. He was already unresponsive while on his flight back to Minneapolis the following day. The private jet made an emergency landing in Illinois where the musician was treated for opioid overdose. Once he regained consciousness, he left the hospital against medical advice. On the morning of April 21, a 911 call was received regarding an unconscious man in a Paisley Park home. Emergency responders found him in an elevator, unresponsive. They tried to perform CPR, but apparently, he had already been dead for hours. He passed away at the age of 57 due to an accidental overdose on fentanyl.
