The Ocean State
The official nickname of Rhode Island is “The Ocean State,” thanks to the big inlets and bays that comprise 14 percent of the state’s total area. The residents of Rhode Island, called Rhode Islanders, speak in a distinct accent that people describe as a combination of the New York City and Boston accents. This unique accent may have originated from the state’s early settlers who came from eastern England.

Just like the rest of New England, Rhode Island’s specialty is the clam chowder. Popular variations include the white New England and the red Manhattan, but its most distinct version is the clear-broth Rhode Island Clam Chowder. Aside from clams, lobsters are huge in the state as well. Where else in the world would you be able to find seafood battling each other with knives? Nowhere, that’s where. Only in Rhode Island.
