The Show Me State
The culture in Missouri is a mixture of Midwestern and Southern US elements. It is the hometown of the musical styles ragtime, St. Louis Blues, and Kansas City jazz. The famous Kansas City-style barbecue is also from Missouri. The state is famous for its beer brewing and winemaking as well. Among all states, Missouri’s alcohol policies are the most lenient. Popular tourist spots include Table Rock Lake, Branson, and Lake of the Ozarks.
While Missouri does not have an official nickname, it is usually called the “Show Me State.” The exact origin of the phrase is still debated, but many attribute it to Congressmen Willard Vandiver’s 1899 speech that said, “I’m from Missouri, and you have got to show me.” Basically, the phrase denotes skepticism.
