The Old Line State
During the Revolutionary War, the famous Maryland 400 (members of the 1st Maryland Regiment) repeatedly charged a superior British force at the Battle of Long Island. While they were outmatched and there were many casualties, their bravery allowed General Washington to evacuate the majority of his troops to Manhattan. To commemorate their heroism, Maryland was named the “Old Line State.” In honor of the fallen shoulders, a monument, as well as numerous plaques, were built in Brooklyn.
This rather unwelcoming welcome sign is what greets you as you approach Maryland. Unfortunately, the state is mocked (primarily by people from Virginia and Pennsylvania) because locals do not seem to know how to drive. Sadly, as seen in this picture, the case against them is strong.
