Looking Back…
In hindsight, Matt wishes they had a press representative to manage all the backlash they received from publishing the Facebook post. That was his one regret. Unfortunately, the fact of the matter is that no matter how good your intentions are, some people will always see something negative in your cause. Matt recalls that it was pretty difficult to handle the backlash, and it’s hard to figure out what to do when people are spreading such uncalled for negativity.
He had no idea his story was going to get so big. Neither he nor Chauncy and Barbara were prepared for all that media attention. On top of all that, they received many bizarre offers that they didn’t know how to respond to. Somebody once offered Chauncy a lawn mower from Amazon. Another person offered to buy his mother new teeth. After a while, they received an offer from a local news publication to run their story. Not long after that, they received an offer from Ellen DeGeneris to come on her show. The people behind GoFundMe also maintained regular communication with Matt and Chauncy. To say that they were overwhelmed with all the attention is an understatement.
