Chauncy Jones Black
The boy calmly came to a stop and looked up at Matt White’s towering form. While he was dwarfed by this tall and lanky stranger, he mustered up the courage to introduce himself. His name was Chauncy Jones Black, a sixteen-year-old kid who had traveled via bus to reach his destination (what he liked to call the “rich people’s Kroger”). Chauncy was hungry and in dire need of food. He never asked for any handouts, though. And this was the first thing that astonished Matt about the kid (hint: there are more astounding surprises to come).
Chauncy wanted to work in exchange for food. He was willing to provide whatever service he could offer in order to get something to eat. He was completely empty-handed and wanted to work for food, but he needed to do it soon. Chauncy only had one hour left before he had to catch the last bus home. His sick mother was waiting for him back there.
