Poverty in Memphis
According to a 2017 report from the University of Memphis, the city was home to more poverty-stricken people than any of the other large cities in America. While the poverty rate increased for every race in 2016, the numbers are much higher for African Americans.

Dr. Elena Delavega, the woman responsible for producing the report every year, explained that there are many factors that contribute to the city’s high poverty rate. These factors include an extremely low minimum wage and transportation issues. The stats for the children of Memphis are equally troubling.
