Tennessee Bureau of Investigation reported that after Nichols was stopped, a confrontation occurred followed by Nichols running from the scene on foot after which another confrontation occurred.
An ambulance was called for him after he complained of shortness of breath. He sadly died 3 days later at the hospital. A very disturbing photo of Nichols was made public in which his face is covered in blood with a swollen eye and he’s hooked to a breathing machine.
An autopsy commissioned by his family found that he suffered “extensive bleeding from severe beating.”

The Memphis Police Department has since fired 5 officers, all of them black, for their involvement in Nichols’ arrest and death. MPD stated that the 5 officers violated “multiple department policies, including excessive use of force, duty to intervene, and duty to render aid.”
