Bizarre Boulders
In March of 2018, NASA shared this image taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, and entitled it “The Case of the Martian Boulder Piles.” If you focus on the slug-like sand dunes, then you probably won’t get the title. But if you take a closer look at the open space, you will notice that it does form neatly arranged piles of rocks.

According to NASA scientists, the beautiful formation of these boulder piles may have resulted from a “frost heave” process. The freeze-and-thaw cycles allow the rocks to form into neatly arranged shapes. This process is actually not that uncommon and is even observed here on our home planet.
