The scene involving the hurricane and the boat was taken from Port Royal’s SC Ports Authority. Hurricane Carmen is a real-life hurricane that made landfall in 1974 on the Gulf of Mexico. In the film, the Atlantic hurricane destroyed Bayou La Batre’s shrimping industry.
Jenny, Forrest Gump’s boat, was at sea when the hurricane hit. While it suffered some damage, it wasn’t thrown to land like all the boats in the harbor. Gump’s business thrived thanks to the incident, with lack of competition driving all customers to him.
