Cast In Savannah…
While a lot of scenes were filmed in Savannah, Georgia, there were also scenes shot on Hunting Island and Fripp Island in South Carolina which helped give the movie a historical feel. Hunting Island was used in filming the war scenes in the movie and is now one of the most famous state parks in the area.
For some of the scenes involving the Vietnam war, the producers made use of Ocean Creek Golf Course located on Fripp Island. This is where Forrest, Bubba, and Lt. Dan marched through the maritime forest, with the mountains added later with the help of digital software.
