Acting with an Accent
Tom Hanks wanted to soften Forrest’s accent in the film, but thanks to Michael Conner Humphreys, the actor who played the young Forrest Gump, director Zemeckis was able to convince Hanks to portray the heavy Southern accent that was highlighted in the novel.
Humphreys had a unique drawl which Hanks then incorporated in the older Forrest’s character too. Hanks said that in order to imitate Humphreys accented way of speaking more effectively, he spent hours recording himself talking with the young actor on cassette tapes.
