Origins

The origin of the name Iran can be traced to an old inscription that was found at Naqsh-e Rostam, an ancient necropolis in Fars province. The inscription, which was written in the now-extinct Parthian language, used the term Aryan when referring to the Iranian people.

Iran’s capital Tehran, meanwhile, gets its name from a word which roughly translates to “warm slope.” This seems to be an appropriate name, especially when considering the fact that summers in Tehran can get unbearably hot, with temperatures going above 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) on some days.
