Louisa May Alcott
You may know Louisa May Alcott as the writer behind the popular novel, Little Women. The book is considered a classic and it also led to the sequels, Little Men and Jo’s Boys. Apart from novels, Alcott wrote poems and short stories.
In a conservative society, Alcott’s decision to stay single until her death was considered unusual and caused quite a stir. On a visit to a friend’s home, Alcott was quoted as saying that while it was pretty and sweet, she would rather paddle her own canoe and be a free spinster.
