Urine for Laundry

If you haven’t noticed yet, the Romans had a certain fondness for cleanliness, not only for themselves but for their clothes too. Which is why they didn’t reserve their urine for oral hygiene only. They slathered their laundry in it too.

Urine contains ammonia which is a very effective cleanser. It is capable of getting out dirt and grease from clothes. In ancient Rome, they had vats that collected urine on the streets. It was a place where people could freely relieve themselves, and when the vats were full, they would be taken to the laundry, diluted with water, and poured over soiled clothes.
