While flowers are still used today as extracts in different scents and perfumes, back in the day, people would carry flowers around with them to cover the fact that they smelled bad. They didn’t take baths regularly as we do now which is why they needed something to cover the odor.
If you are familiar with the term “nosegay,” which is another word for a small bouquet, this is where it was derived from. A small bunch of flowers meant to make your nose (and the noses of others) happy. It’s definitely one creative way of dealing with body odor.
